After watching Ken Robinson's TED Talk about education, express your thoughts on how his views do/do not relate to the concept of Genius Hour. What about Ken Robinson's views do you agree/disagree with?
I thought that Ken Robinson's TED Talk about education related to the concept of Genius Hour quite a bit. He spoke about how students and teachers are often caught up in routine curriculum and do not allow the students creativity to come out. He brought up the question of then what about those kids that do not enjoy school or perform very well? The school system then does not support them into learning it but making them more likely to drop out. Genius Hour is all about providing time for students to learn about a topic they are interested in and inspire creativity. I agree with his views on this. School does need to teach certain subjects and topics, however, I think it is very important that they are also being encouraged to have their own ideas. School is focused too heavily on making sure we know rules and equations but it does not build individualism. We all get to choose what we want to do with our lives and we make our own decisions everyday. Like Ken said in TED Talk, everyone has creativity who makes them who they are and children learn by curiosity. The yearning for information is what makes them want to research a subject more and learn that knowledge for themselves. This is what we need to incorporate more into schools which is why Genius Hour is a good idea.
